Replacing tape drive in RS/6000 7025 F40 running AIX 4.2.1?
I've just landed in a situation where an old IBM RS/6000 7025 F40running AIX 4.2.1 has had it's tape drive fail. The tape drive inquestion is an HP C1533A 4mm 4GB/8GB DAT drive. It repeatedly getswrite failures, and my trusty techique of whacking the cleaning tapein hasn't worked. Unfortunately the only person that knew anythingabout the server is long gone, and as I was the first person to admitto having used *nix (and being the new guy) it has fallen to me to tryand find a solution.I've sourced a Sony SDT-5010, which appears to be pretty muchidentical to the defective HP unit other than the branding (sameflavour of SCSI interface, supports the same media etc) but I don'treally know anything about making hardware changes under AIX. Fromwhat I've discovered from googling and attempting to read some manualsit seems that I should be able to do the following:1. Remove the current tape drive in smit2. Power down3. Remove defective unit4. Insert 'new' unit5. Power up6. Add new tape drive in smitThis all seems a bit too easy to me... is there something that I ammissing? drivers/files that need updating? Configuration that smitdoesn't tidy up when removing, or sort out when adding? Can someone out there with some actual experience, rather than my'this ought to work' approach, point out anything that I'm missing...I'm happy to admit being a total AIX novice - I started in this joblast week and that was m...

Is it possible for a malfunctioning tape drive to permanently harm a tape?
Greetings! Here is my question: is it possible for a malfunctioning (travan)tape drive to cause even a new tape to have a write error afterward? Now, some background! :-) I have a Linux computer, a 450 MHz, Pentium II system purchased inmid-1999. It had a travan, TR4, tape drive. I had numerous problems withit, the first three years. (I wound up sending it back, under warranty, acouple of times.) In 2002, I purchased a new travan tape drive. It isTR5 instead of TR4, so this led to the purchase of new travan tapes. This last drive has been pretty good. I don't believe I had manyproblems with it, until the last six months to a year. I started having backups that didn't finish, for one reason oranother. I would purchase brand new travan tapes, and about 30 to 40% ofthem would work, and slightly over half didn't even work, on the firsttry. I took many Imation tapes back to Office Depot. About a month ago now, I purchased three more travan tapes fromCertance, which seems to be the company that handles Seagate's tapebusiness now. I got three new travan tapes. The first one worked. Thesecond and third one didn't. (Most of the errors are write errors.) I purchased a travan cleaning cartridge, which arrived the middle ofthis past week. I cleaned the tape drive head. Still, now, the secondand third brand new Certance tapes which arrived only a couple of weeks orso ago, are apparently not usabl...

Travan Tape Drive Ejects Tape Automatically
I am managing a Win SBS 2003 Dell server for a client of mine. My Windows Admin experience is limited and we're having some issues with our Seagate STT3401 Travan drive. Whenever I insert either of the 2 tapes we use for backup they are imediately ejected (well, after 30 secs or so of whirrin). I have downloaded the ntbackup patch and the previous IT consultant was using a script they downloaded to get around the ntbackup compatability issues. Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks. Emergency Recovery
I'm running SCO Unixware 7.1.3. I used emergency_disk and emergency_rec to create the emergency backup diskettes and tape. All worked well. I used the following commands: /sbin/emergency_disk -d / diskette1 /sbin/emergency_rec ctape3 I'm now doing a 'restore test' on another system that is very much like the system I backed up. Same size disk drives, same RAID configuration, etc. We set up the RAID, and there's nothing else on the disks. SDLT320 and DLT tapes on SDLT tape drives
Hoping this will save time for somebody else:I haven't used a Solaris tape for (many) years and I was trying to getmy new Sun (QUANTUM) SDLT320 tape drive working. Suggestions for tape backup drive (100Gigs or more per tape)
Hello,I'm setting up a home server using Ubuntu 7.04, and I'm using twomirrored 320 Gig drives for my data. - Archive 2150S tape drive - External SCSI enclosure - 5 data tapes The tape drive is a 5.25' SCSI device that supports up to 150 MB storage. (included tapes are 60 MB, plus one 150 MB). The case it's installed in is about 10' x 9.5' x 2.5', dual SCSI ports, ID selector and fan. It's adaptable as a CD-ROM case (even has audio L/R push outs in back).

Abstract
Subsystem Device Driver Path Control Module (SDDPCM) installation packages for the AIX operating system.
Download Description
SDDPCM is a loadable path control module designed to support the multipath configuration environment in the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server, the IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller, the IBM Storwize family, the IBM Flash System V840 and V9000, the IBM TotalStorage DS family and IBM BladeCenter S SAS Raid Controller Module (RSSM).
When the supported devices are configured as MPIO-capable devices, SDDPCM is loaded and becomes part of the AIX MPIO FCP (Fibre Channel Protocol)/FCoE (Fibre Channel over Ethernet) device driver or SAS device driver. The AIX MPIO device driver or SAS device driver with the SDDPCM module enhances the data availability and I/O load balancing.
SDDPCM manages the paths to provide:
- High availability and load balancing of storage I/O
- Automatic path-failover protection
- Concurrent download of licensed internal code
- Prevention of a single-point-failure caused by host bus adapter, fibre channel cable, Ethernet cable, or host-interface adapter on supported storage
